This is the only portrait photograph of Vincent van Gogh that is considered to be authentically identified. It was taken in January 1873, when he was 19 years old and living in The Hague, where he worked for the Goupil & Cie art gallery. At that time, he was still nearly ten years away from beginning his artistic career. For decades, it was believed that another photograph of Van Gogh existed, supposedly taken when he was 13 years old. However, in 2018, the Van Gogh Museum proved that the young man in that photograph was actually his younger brother, Theo, photographed at age 15 in Brussels. The resemblance between the two had led to this mistake for more than half a century. Van Gogh was never again photographed in a portrait that could be identified with certainty. In fact, he was not particularly fond of photography and preferred painted portraits, which he believed were better able to capture a person’s personality.
