“From Abstract Expressionism to Emotional Rationalism”

ApostolisZolotakis                    Kelly Athanasiadou

Conceptual Approach Synopsis:
Interaction between reason and emotion on the basis of abstraction. Painting and sculpture liberated from the necessity of representation. The substance is not identified through the imaging but by interacting with materials which acquire form, movement and rhythm. The material itself becomes a structural object of expression provoking sometimes logical thinking and sometimes the emotion of the viewer. Conceptually the exhibition as a total is, avisual confront of the two artists on thedelicate balance between rational processing of information and emotional perception of it. Each artist has to deal with this exact balance in order to help the viewer make his personal projection.

Description of Exhibition
// ApostolisZolotakisworks on canvas by releasing the dynamics of color and movement with an alleged emotional charge. Rationality affects his work in a construction-deconstruction balance. He plays with the arrangement of the space inside the canvas without being emotionally affected himself.
// Kelly Athanasiadou used steel as primary material of her sculptures. She placesthe strict proportions of volumes in the optical focus of the viewer, and highlights the basic lines of forms she creates.
The dialogue between the two artists about the "Emotional Rationalism" in permanent basis of abstraction, involves themselves and their audience in a creative way.
// ApostolisZolotaks, continuing his abstract work presents mixed media work using among others, materials with strong emotional dynamics (religious offerings) involving them with diverse materials. This way the “offering” becomes element of abstract narrative and causes emotional charge in the interpretation of the observer. As structural element of the artwork the “religious offerings” are sometimes very hard to distinguish and other times they appear as clearly readable figures on the canvas. Incorporating the religious signal to his abstract work, Zolotakis covers it with matter creating an emulsion which gives the sense of organic material and approaches the texture of body secretions. This organic element intensifies the emotional attachment of the audience with the artwork and deliberately degrades rationalism
// Kelly Athanasiadou, in a creative contrast to ApostolisZolotakisapproaches the work mainly rationally. She presents her “Pythagorean Tetraktys” collection with 12 metal sculptures, inspired by Pythagora’sTetraktys theory. She makes a retrospection of the ancient Greek geometric structure. She illustrates ina sculptural way a philosophical construction that moves on the basis logic and transcendent with multidimensional interpretations and symbolisms. The emotional factor lies in her work within the disclosure of the hidden cosmogenic and theological qualities of numbers as attributed by the Pythagoreans.Athanasiadou also presents another collection of metal sculptures entwined as abstract structural formations. Prismata are the most abstract sculptures of hers where the surface is dividedinto smaller elements, so that the final image becomes a prismatic representation of the total.
